Emerson, Lake & Palmer were an English progressive rock (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock) supergroup (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supergroup_%28music%29) formed in London in 1970. The band consisted of keyboardist Keith Emerson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Emerson), singer, bassist, and producer Greg Lake (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Lake), and drummer and percussionist Carl Palmer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Palmer). They were one of the most popular and commercially successful progressive rock bands in the 1970s[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer#cite_note-1)[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer#cite_note-2) with a musical sound including adaptations of classical music (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_music) with jazz (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz) and symphonic rock (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphonic_rock) elements, dominated by Emerson's flamboyant use of the Hammond organ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammond_organ), Moog synthesizer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moog_synthesizer), and piano (although Lake wrote several acoustic songs for the group).[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer#cite_note-BSS_Liner-3)
After forming in early 1970, the band came to prominence following their performance at the Isle of Wight Festival (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Wight_Festival_1970) in August 1970. In their first year, the group signed with Atlantic Records (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Records) and released Emerson, Lake & Palmer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer_%28album%29) (1970) and Tarkus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarkus) (1971), both of which reached the United Kingdom top five. The band's success continued with Pictures at an Exhibition (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pictures_at_an_Exhibition_%28Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer_album%29) (1971), Trilogy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilogy_%28Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer_album%29) (1972), and Brain Salad Surgery (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_Salad_Surgery) (1973). After a three-year break, Emerson, Lake & Palmer released Works Volume 1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Works_Volume_1) (1977) and Works Volume 2 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Works_Volume_2) (1977) which began their decline in popularity. After Love Beach (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Beach) (1978), the group disbanded in 1979.
The band reformed partially in the 1980s with Emerson, Lake & Powell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Lake_%26_Powell) featuring Cozy Powell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cozy_Powell) in place of Palmer, and 3 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_%281980s_band%29), with Robert Berry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Berry) in place of Lake. In 1991, the original trio reformed and released two more albums, Black Moon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Moon_%28album%29) (1992) and In the Hot Seat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Hot_Seat) (1994), and toured at various times between 1992 and 1998. Their final performance took place in 2010 at the High Voltage Festival (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Voltage_Festival) in London to commemorate the band's fortieth anniversary, before Emerson's death in 2016 marked the end of the group.[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer#cite_note-keithemersondeath-4)[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer#cite_note-billboard_emerson_death-5)
